How amazing it is to dance!   I’ve been adventuring myself into dance since I was born.

I know that moving the body in gracious and incredible ways can look like a doorway to beauty and freedom for those watching.

For those dancing, the backstage is not all flowers, jumps and twirls as it looks. Hundreds of rehearsal hours spent focusing on perfecting a minute-long piece of performance! In a nutshell, it’s a massive hard work.

Dancer Flexibility x strength

For a dancer like you, flexibility and strength are non-negotiable, the winner is who is able to keep him or herself injury free!

As a Massage Therapist and Kinesiologist, when treating dancers, I hear a lot “I don’t feel pain, I just feel tight”, “my knees and my hips bother me at times”.  When in fact often I see dancers underestimating the pressure on the body.

In order to be able to keep dancing (and shining those twirls to the world), it’s imperative for dancers to look after their bodies, strengthening the weak spots and stretching and releasing tight muscles and tendons that can affect the joints, specially if hyper-mobility is present!

How can Remedial Massage support dancers to keep shining?

Remedial Massage aims to release the muscles, tendons and mobilise joints that are causing either restrictive movement, pain or discomfort in the joints (knees, back, shoulder, neck or ankles).

  • Keeping the status of an Injury free dancer – Because you use your muscles more than an average person, they become more defined and harder, therefore, more prone to injury. An analogy I use is which cup is more prone to break when it hit the floor, the rubber, softer one, or the glass, harder one?  The rubber one may even bounce off the floor.
  • Freedom of movement – depending on the type of dance, some muscles can be used more than others, which can cause some imbalances in posture and how the body holds itself.  Remedial Massage help you regain flexibility releasing muscles, tendons
  • Improve performance – Due to training, the muscles often get fatigued, which is normal due to its recovery period, Massage will speed up the recovery by increasing blood flow and eliminating lactic acid from the muscles
  • Be more than prepared for an audition –  when you need to be at your best, not only your body, but your mind need to be on the right place. Massage help release the muscles as well as clear the mind opening space to confident thoughts.

How often should a dancer loosen up their muscles and free up their joints?

The tricky bit for a dancer is to notice pain before t is a little bit too late, as most dancers have developed what we call a “high pain threshold”.
If you have never had an injury as a dancer, I bet you one of your colleagues have had strains, sprains or other more serious injuries that need more than simply icing the area.

Why get on that edge of an injury?  Nooooo… we don’t want to get to that stage,,,

The key is the consistency use of your foam roller and make your stretches a fun part of training!
Manual Therapy (such as Remedial Massage, chiropractic or Bowen Therapy) at least once a month for maintenance of the muscles, tendons and joints, will help you a lot.

The treatments could start weekly or fortnightly leading down to every 4 to 6 weeks! Consistency is key to keep you shining!

How is a Remedial Massage different to relaxation or Thai Massage?

Remedial Massage Therapists are fully trained, insured and have to undergo continuing education to keep their qualification.

All massages offer variety of techniques and pressure tailored to the clients’ needs.

Remedial Massage can use a combination of Swedish (relaxation for superficial muscles), trigger point, use of oil or dry massage, and the therapist will spend time where will give you the most relief and provide a treatment plan if required.

Relaxation massage is usually performed with lighter pressure, more flow and it can attend to the whole body.
