How do we identify we experience fear of failure?
Here are some signs that may indicate stuckness because of the fear of failure:
- You may create excuses to not do what you really want (even though time and money are resources we all can do with more of)
- ie ” I’d love to travel, but I don’t have money”
- “I’d love change my job and start a business, but now is not the right time”
- You may feel often disappointed about people/situations outside of you not being supportive (government, economy, boss, kids, partner)
- You may not even allow yourself to dream big, feeling restricted in life, or you may have forgotten how to have fun and take things to seriously
Is the fear of failure always connected with low self-esteem?
Not always.
Yes, most cases fear of starting something new is scary.
Some people train themselves to see the fear of the unknown as excitement. Let’s face it, it’s a very uncomfortable feeling in our bodies, right?
It may feel we are in serious danger. Or we may feel frozen. Some people compensate fear by feeling frustrated without a conscious reason.
In a society that not even feeling fear is acceptable, at least frustration and worry are accepted, so that’s why it is much more comfortable to complain about politics or other forces outside of them than to face their fears.
What are the steps to overcome the fear of failure?
You know when you feel stuck and know something is holding you back, but you can’t put a finger on what is causing it?
The fear of failure is not always easily identified, as it lives in the subconscious mind.
Here are the steps that I personally used this week as went through a huge transformational phase where I decided to go through a process of DETOX to support me in that:
1) Know your big vision, allow yourself to feel it with all your body, heart and mind.
2) Get clear on the very small first step you can take towards that.
3) Challenge yourself to try something completely new and out of your comfort zone (even id it’s scary)
4) Show commitment to yourself by being kind and compassionate with your first steps, let go of trying to be perfect.
5) Play manifestation: put a date, created a container (in the case of the detox, I chose to do it with a group of women on the same wavelength)
6) Intention and preparation are key. Whatever process you decide to start, have a clear intention and know your big why.
7) Decide to play with curiosity, don’t take it too seriously to the extent you’d be frustrated or attached to it
8) Be aware of your body sings, energy, emotions, thoughts. Use the tools that work for you: mindfulness practices and tools to help you to get out of your mind and into the body (ie. meditation, dancing, journaling, healing modalities)
9) Chose to TRUST yourself and TRUST the process
10) Celebrate especially the little wins, observe the “mistakes” (as there are no mistakes when you’re learning), rinse and repeat, have fun with the process, forget the final goal for a bit
I use this process with my clients and it works every time. Slowly their mind and Nervous System start to respond to situations instead of reacting, it’s empowering.
