What has your neck tension to do with your headache?
A very common pattern I treat clinically with a high rate of success is neck tension and headache, whether they present themselves combined or isolated.
Neck tension can appear for many reasons, and the most common are:
- postural imbalances
- digestive issues (reflux, nausea, constipation or bloating)
- stress (pushing through to meet deadlines, over-committing to family, financial worries, difficulty saying “NO”
- fight/flight mechanism switched on
- internal organ damage/imbalance.
- muscular imbalance
- past injury or whiplash
- cervicalgia
- arthritis
- inadequate physical activity for your body type
- excessive or lack of exercise
When the shoulders and neck tightness appear following chronic digestive issues, it shows that the muscle tightness is a byproduct of a deeper physical imbalance that has the potential to be healed. And that when Natural Treatments have a lot to contribute in resolving those symptoms that we convince ourselves that they are OK to have.
Headaches are a sign that the body is somehow out of balance, causing the muscles of the body, especially the ones of the neck to spasm.
Is there anything new to learn about my headaches?
Information is important and you may have found loads on the internet, trying to find the solution for your specific case. Maybe you know enough, but what I am about to share are not always common sense.
A headache can present itself along different areas of the head, sometimes it catches the back of the head, sides or front of the head. All of them can be quite annoying and debilitating whilst one tries to get through the day, with necessary work and daily tasks done.
What are the most common causes of headache?
Headaches are most commonly related to excessive stress, dehydration and can even be related to digestive issues. Muscle tend to tighten in response to those imbalances.
Remedial Massage will help flush toxins out of your body as well as improve blood flow into muscles, tissues and organs.
This is the list of most common causes of a headache, according to my experience in clinic:
• Previous accident or trauma
• Previous injury (whiplash, cervicalgia)
• Health conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia
• Muscle tightness
• Hips imbalance/twist
• Lack of flexibility with low ROM in the neck
• Lack of exercise
• Muscle stifness and/or weakness
• Over/under use of one muscle of a group of muscles
• Inflammation (local or systemic)
• Mental stress overload
• Emotional stress
• Poor diet (nutrients deficiency)
• Overweight
• Weak core muscles
• Tendon or joints problems
How does Remedial massage help relieve headache?
Remedial Massage will release those tight muscles on the back and front of the neck (which you may not even be aware they are tight), as well as shoulders and upper back. When those muscles are tight they can block adequate blood flow into the brain as well as play up with the cranial bones, causing unwanted pressure in areas of the cranium.
Another very common symptom that Remedial Massage helps a lot to relief headache is releasing the tightness in the jaw. Those tight muscles in the jaw usually also cause pressure on the temples (side of the head) and front of the neck. Many can grind or clench the teeth, especially during sleep.
Massage can also help to relief migraines and the nausea that usually comes with it and many other muscle, organ and hormone imbalances.
How does Remedial Massage integrate with other modalities?
Remedial Massage will help with blood flow to the organs, lubrication of the joints, releasing trigger points, mobilising joints and resetting nervous system proprioceptors mechanisms.
When Remedial Massage is used alongside with chiropractic, kinesiology or acupuncture treatments, in increases the synergy of the treatment, as those modalities also focus on resetting muscle homeostasis and balancing the nervous system.
You should communicate with your Massage Therapist, Kinesiologist, Chiropractor, Acupuncturist how long you have had the headache or migraine for as well as how often you experience them. The best scenario is when all the practitioners you are working with communicate with each other so they are on the same page, treating you holistically from all possible angles for better results.
How is a Remedial Massage different to a relaxation or Thai massage?
Remedial Massage Therapists are trained to work holistically not only focused on releasing muscles and elongating tight tendons but also on mobilising the joints and on promoting general wellbeing, benefiting from the increased blood flow to muscles, organs and glands that were previously stagnant.
Remedial Massage Therapists are trained to work with injuries and other physical conditions. They can work alongside other health care practitioners in order to find the cause of the body imbalances and work towards the results of bringing the body back into balance.
The Remedial Massage treatments can also be blended with relaxation as this helps the superficial muscles to soften so that deeper muscles can be worked on. Each person has unique and specific needs.
As a Kinesiologist as well, I use tools to encourage the body to cope better with stress and the organs to be replenished and restore, increasing the whole body system efficiency. And it complements Massage Therapy beautifully.
Even though your experienced Massage Therapist will be able to feel the tight muscles in your body, the more you communicate with your Massage Therapist where you are feeling pain or discomfort, (before and during the treatment) the quicker and more efficient the results will be.
