“Oh damn, I am procrastinating again! I hate this vicious circle and it is frustrating to feel stuck and feel I am not doing what I should be doing!”.
Sounds familiar?
Procrastination is a protection mechanism created by our mind to stop any risky actions.
When we have desires that involve actions outside our comfort zone, our mind switches off the “action” mechanism, so the desire gets erased and killed during the thought process.
Thanks to procrastination,
that keeps us safe from appearing ridiculous or failing.
There was a time where we must have felt really ridiculous or a failure in the past when we tried something similar. It could have been few years ago or even in our childhood.
Hating our procrastination is not the solution.
(But I hate it!! It’s annoying and frustrating feeling like my body doesn’t follow my thoughts!).
We must get real. And the reality is that we are not starting that big project in our lives, changing career, starting a business, enrolling at the gym or taking that course. Hating it is not helping!
So what do I must do, then, to tame this damn procrastination monster?
So let’s play catch here. Procrastination is there, it is real. Period.
If you were to seek and destroy the procrastination inside you. how does it actually look like? Let your mind delve deep into your body to find it. Closing the eyes always help me to focus inside my body, where do you see or feel procrastination? Is it in your belly? Or is it in your chest? Maybe it is in your head…
Ok, that little procrastination little monster may not look or feel great.
It also causes you a little anxiety. But anxiety is just energy moving chaotically inside us, specially in our belly. The procrastination and the anxiety are there, maybe a little sadness or hopelessness. And it is OK!! We all know it is there! How do they look like when you look inside?
Procrastination appears when our mind loses track of what is our priority.
A client of mine’s story, for example, went like that…
“I want to go to the gym, but I don’t have time because I am tired when I finish work.”
So, even though her mind really thinks it is good to go to the gym, other priorities are already set in her mind.
The questions I asked her to help with achieving her goals and feeling good went something like that :
“Why do you really need to go to the gym?”,
“What is your body preventing you from doing?”,
“Is it about how your body looks?”
“Do you feel you’d be more accepted with a slimmer body?”,
“What makes you feel tired after work?”,
“Do you find your work draining?”
“How do you know if your diet supports your energy levels?
And the questions could still go on… until we click! An insight! Something we never thought before! Bang!! The brain made a new connection! New possibilities, new attitudes, new actions! Huuuuuummmmmmmm!!!
How transformation is possible and not as difficult as we may think!
Get real. Your procrastination is there. It is keeping you from being ridiculous and failing. But when you see your priorities clearly in a whiteboard, without the confusion of your mind, you will clearly see where your mistakes have been! And that will be your key to freedom and self-control. Amazing!
